the mint

Ahhhh - Don't you just love relaxing! The last couple days, I've been sleeping in and taking naps, eating sushi and drinking starbucks...

Today, Brad, Trevor and I went to the
Royal Canadian Mint and went on a tour to see how coins are made! Very cool indeed.

Yesterday, after eating at a great sushi restaurant Brad and I ventured to the Manitoba Legislative buildings and then onto the Winnipeg Art Gallery. It sure was fun, they had a exhibition of art and satire. We were rolling with laughter!

And tonight - who knows whatever looks like fun!

relaxin' in winnipeg

My conference is over and I'm pooped right out. I think I could sleep all day.

My presentation went well despite having to tell a few jokes before it all began (the av equipment went screwy and needed alterations) and feeling nervous for the 24 hours before. But it sure is good to finish and be able to enjoy the rest of the time with canada-wide co-workers.

Now Brad has arrived and we are going exploring!

winnipeg

I'm in Winnipeg. The Detroit of the north. The windest corner in Canada. The geographical centre of N. America and I have radiant heating in the bathroom floor. Awesome! I love heated floors. What a fabulous invention.

Other than that. It's fine. Downtown Winnipeg, like downtown Detroit is kind of dumpy. Nothing special and not fun to just wander around. So..I've wandered and now I'm ready for lunch and an afternoon session of older drivers and road design.

cheap Thrills

Do not buy THRILLS. For some reason, today, this Canadian gum stood out at me in the university store. Probably the Canadian bit. But yuck...it only has flavour for the first 10 chews and then stale and hard to chew. Apparently they used to be sold as a little envelope full of tiny littlepieces. Now that I have been reminded. I remember. But this was no thrill.

What is your favourite gum?

the car wash

Tuesday, comrade Roy and I decided that the work van needed a good cleaning before we (our office) took it on our long road trip to Winnipeg. So we spent a good half an hour unloading it (lots of equipment). And then off we went to Golf's car wash. What's nice about this place was that you don't have to keep loading coins into the different machines and panic to clean everything. What's bad about this place is that you loose track of time and end up spending 45 minutes cleaning out a vehicle and paying $25. OUCH!

And on my way to pay I asked the young guy supervising the place when and where I pay and swiftly left to the counter. As I reached the counter my feet flew right from under me and my hip and hand landed on the wet, foamy, muddy ground and I slid. Oops. I hope no one saw that.

Today we found out the work van engine is leaking oil and should be left behind for repairs. We're taking a brand new, clean, rental instead! Hmmm...the irony.

the nano

The past couple days I've been walking home in my own soundtrack. Brad received his well earned Ipod Nano. I had asked him with excitement to tough it out at his job and stay there until he received this nano. Poor guy. What a wonderful husband. He was suppose to receive it for training that he had six weeks ago...who would have known it would take that long to arrive. Oops.

So...I was all plugged in yesterday walking home and got to the corner where I leave campus. Of the 4 of us standing on the corner, 3 of us were plugged in. That's so odd and funny. One lady all she had were the clothes on her back. A phone in one hand and a nano in the other. What a funny culture we live in.

But I thought it was interesting how everyone has the own soundtrack, playlist, running as they are out and about. It's just like you're in your own movie scene. Mmmm...I could run through the fields with the sound ofmusic. I could but I won't.

What would your movie soundtrack include?

screechin' in

Saturday night I became an honourary newfie.

I'm not accustomed to taking "shots" of rum and not of dark, bitter, screechin' rum so needless to say I was a little nervous of its effects. Brad and I attended the annual Newfoundland Club lobster boil. Mmmmm...delicious. But last year I missed the screechin' in event because of a wonderful surprise wedding shower. So this was my year to become an honourary newfoundlander.

A screechin' in is a traditional "ceremony" for mainlanders to become an honourary newfounlander. Our "ceremony" began with a bite of bologne (something a newfie would love). Then they ask you why you want to be a newfie. My reason - marriage. Why else would I become an honourary newfie without being in Newfoundland, on the rock. And then you recite some slighty risque newfie poem while wearing a souwester (you know big yellow fisherman's hat).

Listen here me ol' cock.
I wannsa be a screecher.
And long may your big jib draw.

What exactly that means I still haven't found out but I did learn that it's a regional thing and a few people shared their town's version. After that. THE SCREECH. Of course they were extra friendly and gave me an extra dose of the burning brew. So down went my almost two ounces of radioactive rum (in one gulp I might add). I almost couldn't catch my breath and thought it was going to come back up or I'd pass out. Yuck! EICKS! All I could think was breath in, breath out, swallow, breath in, breath out, swallow. And somewhere in there I managed to kiss a cod (yes, the fish) on the lips. Nots o bad after downing that screech.

To end it all off, I was down on my knees with some kind of three fingered glove on my hand and being "knighted" a newfie. Yipee! I lived. Of course the next morning I woke up with some kind of wonderful bags under me eyes ;)

sweet birds chirping

Ahhh - it has been an absolutely beautiful sunny day today. Everything is lush and green and looks lovely. And it's June. How did it become June.

This past weekend, Brad, Sarah, our friend Bjorn and I went discovering some of Saskatoon's Doors Open. Mostly the churches. We went inside a most gorgeously ornate Ukranian Catholic church. The ceiling was just covered with iconography and fabulous all-glass candeliers. Awe-inspiring. It brought me right back to me medieval art history class and learning about all the symbolism and meanings attached with the iconography. Lovely - what a pity with Martin Luther and the reformation.
